Mark had a dog. It was a good dog. It did all the things a good
dog could be expected to do. The dog protected the house, played with the kids,
and kept Mark company. Mark liked the dog.
One day a man came and said "If you can teach your dog to fetch, I
will give you a dollar for each time he fetches.
Mark thought on this a while. "Some other dogs fetch, my dog
never did but, it's within his ability. I don,t see any reason why he
can't learn to fetch. I mean, I pay for his food, his dog house, I don't
see any reason he couldn't do something other dogs do to help make some
money. Sounds good.
The next day Mark decided to teach his dog to fetch. So he got a
ball and took the dog out back and proceeded in training it to do so. The
dog had other things in mind. The dog thought. "Wait a minute, I've been
here for some time, doing things I've always done. I keep watch of the
house, keep him company, and play with the rug rats. I don't need to do
this!
Needless to say the dog was not very obedient. Then Mark
thought, "Let's reward the dog for doing this little bit extra. Mark
went out and bought the dog's favorite treat.
Mark then took the dog back outside and proceeded to try training
the dog again. This time the dog got excited. "Hey Doggie Doodles! My
favorite! What?! Not this again! I don,t have to do this! I want the
treats but I already get my food and doghouse I don't need to fetch.
Mark got frustrated again. He couldn't understand. He was not
asking the dog to do his taxes...just do the same thing other dogs do. He's
even willing to give the dog rewards for doing this. I know he does all
those other things, but a dog costs money and for me to get a dollar for
every fetch would be awfully helpful for the family as well as the dog. I
wish the dog would just......
Just as Mark was finishing his sentence he saw another dog in the
alley. He called the little scruffy thing over petted it and cooed at it
like an idiot talking to a baby. He got an idea, "I wonder if this dog
will Mark threw the ball. The stray dog was so excited with all the
attention and the opportunity to get food and a place to stay; he'd do
what ever Mark needed. So, he ran quickly to get the ball and bring it
back to Mark. "You can fetch! Mark exclaimed. Mark got excited "This dog
can fetch, I get a dollar for every fetch. I'd be happy to feed this dog,
house this dog....but... I can only afford one dog, what am I gonna do. Mark
thought.
So, do you know what Mark did?
Mark got a new dog!
